By Juliet D'cruz

In this article, students will find a way to get admission to IIT. Students should read all the tips and tricks that help students to get into IIT.

About IIT:

Most of the students who wish to become engineers would like to study at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in India. There are a total of 23 IITs available in India, to get admission in IIT students must participate and clear the two phases of the Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) that is JEE Main and JEE Advanced. This JEE is conducted by Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) and students should clear the exam on their first attempt. JEE is a highly competitive exam because a large number of students will appear for the exam. Also, there are a limited number of seats to get into IIT.

An admission process to get into IIT:

There are two phases of JEE, students must appear and clear both of them to get admission to IIT.

About JEE Main:

From the year 2021, students can appear 4 times in a year for JEE Main, and also students can appear in 3 consecutive years from the year of passing the Class 12 in JEE Main. If the students appear on the exam more than one time then students’ best scores in 2021 will be taken for preparation of ranking.

There are a total of 90 questions asked in the JEE Main. out of 90, students must attempt a total of 75 questions in the exam. Physics, Chemistry, and Maths are the three major subjects students should concentrate on for the JEE Main exam.

About JEE Advanced:

Students who score above the minimum cut-off in JEE Main, those students only can appear for JEE Advanced. The National Testing Agency has set the minimum cut-off score for JEE Main. There are two question papers for JEE Advanced, both papers’ questions are mainly asked in the subjects such as Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. Students’ comprehension, reasoning, and analytical ability will be tested in the exam so the questions in the exam will be asked based on that. 3 hours of duration for each paper in JEE Advanced.

About All India Rank (AIR) and JoSAA:

Students should score 10% of the minimum score for each subject such as Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics for both Papers I and II. Also, students should get aggregate marks of 35% for all three subjects then they will be considered for the Ranking List. If the student’s name is available in the All India Rank List, then they have to participate in the Joint Seat Allocation Authority process (JoSAA).

An overview of JEE and JoSAA:

To secure a seat in IIT, students must appear for both the exams JEE Main and JEE Advanced. Students must clear both the exams then only their names will be available in the All India Rank lists. JoSAA will conduct the seat allocation process in IIT.

  1. Students at least score 75% of aggregate marks in Class 12 or equivalent grades.
  2. Based on the Class 12 board exam, the top 20 percentile score will be announced after the JEE Advanced exam. Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, A language, and any subject besides the above 4 are the subjects considered for the calculation of aggregate marks of the top 20 percentile.

Preparation tips to get into IIT:

Preparation of the exam:

Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics are the three major subjects to prepare for the exam. Students must be strong in the fundamentals of each subject. It’s not about memorizing the formulas and all other concepts but it is all about how well the students get into their subject’s concepts and their competencies in the subjects.

Students must utilize 6 to 8 hours daily to study the concepts then only they can dig into the concepts deeply for each subject. So that they will be able to have a strong in-depth knowledge of the concepts. To get that, students must work hard and should sacrifice the pleasures in their life for the sake of getting into IIT.

Practice and revise the concepts as much as possible so that the students can get the power of knowledge in the concepts for each subject which helps them to crack the exam. Also, students must develop good analytical and logical reasoning skills which help the students to dig into the subjects and be strong in their fundamental concepts.

Experts suggest the following reference books to prepare for the exam. Students should use NCERT class 11 and 12 textbooks of physics, chemistry, and Mathematics.

For Physics,

  • Concepts of Physics – H. C. Verma
  • Understanding Physics – DC Pandey
  • JEE Main and Advanced practice Book Physics  – DC Pandey
  • Wiley’s Halliday / Resnick / Walker Physics book for JEE Main & Advanced – Halliday, Resnick, and Walker
  • Problems in General Physics – I. E. Irodov

For Chemistry,

  • Physical Chemistry problems for JEE (Main & Advanced) – Narendra Awasthi
  • Organic Chemistry – Morrison and Boyd
  • Concise Inorganic Chemistry – J. D. Lee
  • Modern Approach to Chemical Calculations – RC Mukherjee

For Mathematics,

  • Cengage Maths – G TEWANI
  • JEE Advanced Comprehensive Mathematics – Tata McGraw Hill publications
  • Problems Plus in IIT Mathematics – A Das Gupta
  • Arihant Problem Book in Mathematics for IIT JEE – SK Goyal

Once the students are clear in their fundamentals of the concepts, their confidence level will be high for appearing in such a highly competitive exam. Practice and revise the concepts whenever you have the time and also students should study all the concepts and must be experts in that.

Conclusion:

There is no magic and luck to get into IIT. Students must be experts in the in-depth knowledge of the concepts for each subject. Also, remember to check out the list of IIT Colleges in India, to get a boost for what you are aiming for. Students should study the concepts for each subject thoroughly and spend 6 to 8 hours a day preparing for the exam. Also, analytical, logical, and problem-solving skills must be developed during the preparation.
